Stop drinking coffee right now. Sniff it instead. No seriously.

That’s right, sniff it. Don’t get all Hollywood on me now though. I don’t mean it the way you’re thinking. Simply take in the aroma of a fresh bean or of a fresh brew without taking a single sip and definitely without getting some grains up your snout.

I briefly talked in a few posts about how bad coffee is for us that have Acid Reflux / Gastritis / GERD. It’s the worst thing you can do for your body. Well, alcohol and smoking is actually the worst, but anyways. Coffee is loaded with bad acids and caffeine. For the non-acidic people out there, this post isn’t necessarily for you unless you’re trying to kick the habit. However, do listen to this that a posted last week – “If you’re drinking home brew…oh man, please don’t continue drinking the cheap brand coffee (Folgers, etc). You are dominating your stomach. Splurge on the better brands with better beans like illys, Blue Bottle or even Starbucks at least. There are tons of great coffees out there but do yourself a favor and pay at least $7 – $15 plus for a bag, not $7 for a huge jug.”

Now, for us with Acid Reflux / Gastritis / GERD. Go grab a great smelling bag of coffee. Try to find a nice bold smell. Doesn’t matter if it’s beans or grinds. I prefer the beans because I feel it’s a little stronger and definitely less messy. Pour just a tiny amount into a small cup or shot glass. Simply smell it. Give it a big sniff, haha. I usually just sit it by my desk and just slowly take in the aroma. It totally wakes you up and you don’t get that massive low when the caffeine wears off from drinking the coffee. It’s different for everyone, but some people whether they believe it or not are either addicted to the aroma or the routine of coffee, not so much the actual drink. I was addicted to it all. Goodness, at least 2-5 a day.

Now, there’s not a lot of info out there backing this theory up that this actually works. So I’m not claiming I discovered a scientific fact. Think about it though, it just makes sense. After I tried it and it worked I started to see if anyone else has done it. If you scour the web you’ll find a bunch of studies on rats about this and how it eased their stressed just by smelling the coffee. All I know is…it worked for me and I was a 100% addict.

Give it a shot if you’re looking to kick the habit. It helped me out. I went from drinking 2-5 cups a day for years to nothing in a weeks time by trying this little tip. And don’t forget, replace your coffee drinking with wheat grass shots! :D
